Photography Mastery Introduction Course - Mimicking the Masters

Grades: 5-9
Cost: Free

Mimicking the Masters in partnership with the Cleveland Print Room, is designed to introduce Cleveland Metropolitan School District students grades 5-9 to the photographic process. Students will develop an improved sense of visual literacy along with an understanding of the history of the photographers who came before. Through virtual class activities, students will receive instruction on various photographic techniques and concepts. They will also attend virtual lectures and demonstrations on famous photographers and art movements. This program emphasizes collaboration between teacher-artists and students with the goal of truly understanding the meaning of photography. At the end of the 12-week class, the students' work will be presented in an online exhibition. Students who complete the class may also register for our Photography Mastery Program resuming this fall.

In Mimicking the Masters, we'll cover some of the greats: William Eggelston, Steven Shore, Martin Parr, Cindy Sherman, Diane Arbus and many more. We will learn about a new photographer each week, going over their biographical details, their work, and their aesthetic/technical style. Using the tools learned in videos, readings, and online discussions, students will emulate these masters' styles, interpreting the work through their own voices. All you need is a camera phone, no min. megapixel required.

The Orchestra Program (TOP) and Youth Honors Wind Ensemble Program Courses

Grades: K-12
Cost: Free

Dianna Richardson Music Director

These free virtual instrumental music instruction courses for band and string instruments are presented and taught by highly experienced, certified music educators who firmly believe that all students should have access to quality instrumental music instruction. The courses are unique because we offer instruction for students with or without instruments or experience! See below for the different levels of strings and band courses you can complete.

Beginning Level 1

This offering is for students who have never played an instrument before, but have the desire to learn. At this level, students will learn the essentials of rhythmic and music literacy, and instrument basics for their chosen instrument using basic household items to supplement their instruction.

These classes are for students without a string or band instrument. Please specify the instrument that you desire to play upon registration. You may only choose one instrument. Available instruments choices are string instruments (violin or viola) or band instruments (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone).

Beginning Level 2

This offering is for students who have a basic foundation in playing an instrument. At this level, students will continue their progress in becoming proficient in rhythmic and music reading while developing the rhythmic and music literacy while continuing to demonstrate growth on the fundamentals of their respective instrument.

These classes are for students that currently have one of the following instruments. Available instruments choices are string instruments (violin or viola) or band instruments (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone).

Intermediate and Advanced

Intermediate and advanced string and band instrument instruction is repertoire-based. We have selected top quality string and band music for each student to study that serve to advance their musicianship and ensemble skills. Instruction will include individual performance videos, small group sectionals and music theory instruction that connects to the repertoire. Our goal for this program is to end the term with a final performance, either virtual or in person!

Students who desire to participate in these programs will need to submit a basic video of themselves playing a scale and a piece of music that best represents their ability at this time. Students that want to be considered for the advanced ensembles should prepare to play a two-octave scale. (String players should show their ability to shift to be considered for the advanced ensemble).
